My journey to self-discovery began in late 2007 with a visit to my physician and a recommendation to get on the internet and search for Cliff Lathams Adventure Boot Camp at Wolf Pen Creek. It was not difficult to find Cliffs program on the internet, it was not difficult to sign up for the camp and it certainly was not difficult to tell everyone of the life changing decision to be physically fit in 2008.
I started my fitness journey with the mindset of not quitting. I felt this was an excellent opportunity to set things right with my health and the outcome of this endeavor would have long reaching effects on my future.
My first childhood memory of needing to take action to lose the pounds was at 10 years of age. I found an ad in the back of a magazine selling a book titled; Help Your Child Lose Weight and Keep It Off. The only drawback was that my mom did not read, speak or write English and I now had the responsibility to read the book, understand the nutritional concepts, translate the book to Spanish for my mom and help implement the plan to conquer the excess weight. I do not remember if the book helped or not but my self-image of being was set since then.
I struggled through puberty with extra pounds and then high school, never really being obese but always having extra pounds. I never really understood how I could eat next to nothing the entire day and not lose any weight. The t eat mentality followed me into college and later into adulthood where I would lose the same 30 pounds as I yo-yoed up and down. I was at my heaviest in my forties. I have to find the proper way to lose weight and keep it off.
I have learned that exercise, proper rest and the right nutrition for your body is the key to your success in this program. I got keys to the locks built around me and I found out for myself what worked for me during boot camp and what did not. It is a journey of self-discovery that continues on a daily basis. The trainers are there to help you with the physical and mental part and my part was showing up consistently to willingly do the exercises every time, every day. The camaraderie found at the camp brightens the hours invested every morning and fellow campers notice if you are gone.
It is never too late to get started on the right track. I am 44 years old and have never aspired to be an athlete. I have taken the responsibility to change my eating habits, my exercise habits and my sleeping habits to support the emerging being created every morning at boot camp.
The results for me have been more than weight loss. I take less maintenance medication. I feel stronger than I was in my twenties and thirties. I feel the life lesson is to change our comfortable sedentary habits. Instead, take control of life, live it to its fullest, every hour of every day, and make exercise an important part of your change. Starting and maintaining an exercise program was the key to my success and I will continue to exercise to maintain my healthier lifestyle.
