So next time I hear a photographer grumble about shooting yet another sign of a bank or brand logo suffering in this financial downturn, I will thank someone that it isn’t me working for that company going bust. I will thank someone that I am not cooped up in an office all day long. And I will be happy being the proverbial ‘jack of all trades, master of none’ wire-agency photo-journalist. I will remind myself of the far more hostile environments of war, conflict, disease and environmental catastrophe that some of my colleagues have to operate in to get a great picture in ‘their patch’.

We complain about our cameras, our laptops, our internet connections, our computer software, our hours of work, our assignments. We complain about our pay, politicians, press officers, security, traffic, our bosses, our colleagues, our allotted photo positions, and backgrounds in pictures. And we complain about the weather – the stereotype about Brits really is true! However, whilst always somehow feeling relatively new to the job (not sure why, as I ‘officially’ started my career fifteen years ago at the not-so-tender age of 23 in regional newspapers in Bristol in southwest England, certain that I was following the right path after ‘dropping-out’ as a university undergraduate), rarely does a day pass when at some point do I think I am still in the best career in the world.
Where else can you access and shoot the best sporting events in the world? Where else can you get an insight to government machinations and cover the biggest political changes and upheavals in the world, shoot seismic shifts in the environment and similar seismic shifts in the global economic infrastructure? How many other careers allow access into an operating theatre to photograph emergency heart surgery on a child one day and on the next to dealers manically flailing arms on a City trading room floor, whilst also being able to get to go and shoot an athlete pushing human physical limits to the extreme in an Olympic final in Sydney, Athens, Beijing - and maybe a run–down area of the East End of London next?.

I suffer from panic attacks and mild agoraphobia. Currently I am seeing a Psychologist who is working with me using Cognitive Behavior Therapy but I have seen him only one time. My last major panic attack which is my first was back in December of last year. Ever since then, most of everyday I have a problem with shortness of breath, a choking feeling in my throat, dizzyness, feelings of faint, having a tight band on my head, headaches and visions problems like squinting and burning of the eyes. This is beginning to be bothersome to me and it feels like it would trigger a panic attack and of course, I dont want this to happen. Does anyone have a cure to this? Ive been perscribed Zanax for my immediate panic attacks and later perscribed Klonopin for everyday use. I have not used my Klonopin yet because of mixed feelings about it. Does this medication help with this? I heard that relaxation exercises work to cure this. If so, where can I find out how to do it? Any info is appreciated.

My ribs still suck meaning I cant get tossed around and flung across the room in Judo class. It also means that Ive lost a huge outlet to get my frustrations out and vented. A big part of the reason that I love judo is because it turned all that negative energy into something positive. I mean you are worked so hard in class that if you dont use that negative energy youll never make it through.
Yesterday I went back to the doctors and went to see my physician. I dont like her. Not that she is mean or says things that I dont want to hear but that she doesnt engage me. I feel like Im a nuisance and this is only my second visit. During the end of the visit the doc did ask if I wanted to get my STD test done at the same time that I got my blood drawn. Ok sure. I have never had an STD test so what the hell.
Apparently this STD test involves peeing. this was something I didnt know and wasnt prepared for as I had already done so before I headed over there. So I go to see the blood drawing people and they hand me this dixie cup and say fill this. So I ask with what and they say pee. Good thing I asked.
I walk across the hall and try. Nothing Im thinking great this might be a while. Next thing I know its 15 minutes later and Im not only bored but I realize Im half nude from the waist down and I start cracking up. The only thing that would have made this funnier would be total sitcom as I imagine having to run out of the bathroom wearing nothing but my ASSMASTER undies.
Ok so I still cant pee and this is now going on 30 mins and no I dont have my ASSMASTER undies on but there is someone pounding on the door. COME IN! So now I not only have someone pounding on the door but I also have performance anxiety. How do I walk out there with an empty cup? How embarrassing. Swallowing my pride I walk out and decide to sit in the lobby while reading what ever magazine I can to hide my face as I pray my bladder starts to work.
So were working on about 45 to 55 minutes now, the waiting room is packed and the nurse comes up to me trying to be a good customer service rep and says...ve been here a long time what are you waiting on? is there something I can do to help?
I can only reply in a loud deep voice that made her know I dont need help. I mean what would you say? So I told her I cant pee. She turned around and got really red. Apparently Im embarrassing.
90 minutes later and 2.5 trips to Wallgreens to get crappy water to fill myself with so I can pee I finally am able to and then I cant find the little place where they want you to put this cup of gold. I kinda just wanted to chuck it in the room and say here ya go. Can ya tell me if Im pregnant as well?
Oh yeah and as for my ribs...take some Tylenol.
